The steps to take if you fall ill on holiday

by Gaz Wilding

When you go on holiday it should be a time spent relaxing, having fun and not having to worry about anything you usually do. Obviously nobody wants to become ill when on holiday but unfortunately it does sometimes happen and it can be extremely stressful as it is made worse by being away from home. Everyone should know what to do if they get ill on holiday but most people actually don't and only find out when it actually happens to them.

A large number of holiday illnesses are minor and don't require a person to get any medical attention. You need to establish how sever it is first of all so that you can decide on the best course of action. Sickness and headaches aren't uncommon on holidays in hot countries and this is usually because people don't drink as much water as they should and so they become dehydrated.

If you feel that you are more than just dehydrated then you may need to get further advice on what is wrong with you. Before going to a hospital it is sometimes worth speaking to a pharmacist as they will have seen most symptoms numerous times. If the pharmacist knows what is wrong they can prescribe you what you need or tell you what you need to do but if they don't then there is a good chance they will know if you need to go to hospital.

If you do need to go to hospital then you should go immediately and not wait for your condition to get worse. The risks in foreign countries are different to those which we are used to and so you could have something very seriously wrong with you. The severity of what you have can also depend on where you are on holiday.

The best thing to do to protect yourself from illness when travelling abroad is to make sure that you have had all of the relevant immunisations. It is also important to be aware of any potential threats so that you can take precautions against them. Finally be sure that you have insurance to cover you for health care.
